Bernard Jenkin MP has challenged the Government over the European Union (Approval of Treaty Amendment Decision) Bill, which authorises a change to EU treaties to establish the 'European Stability Mechanism' (a permanent bailout fund for Eurozone countries).

Jenkin calls for reform of the honours system

The Public Administration Select Committee (PASC), chaired by Bernard Jenkin MP, has called for the honours system to be reformed so that fewer awards go to civil servants and celebrities, and more go to ordinary citizens.

Jenkin calls for new rules system for ex-ministers and civil servants

The Public Administration Select Committee (PASC), chaired by Bernard Jenkin MP, has called for the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments (ACoBA), which oversees former ministers and civil servants moving from Government to private sector posts, to be replaced by an independent ethics commissioner.

House of Commons passes Jenkin’s motion on Ministers’ watchdog

The House of Commons has supported a motion proposed by Bernard Jenkin MP calling for the watchdog overseeing Ministers to be made more independent.  Mr Jenkin argued that the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Ministers’ Interests should be given the power to start his own investigations, rather than depending on the decision of the Prime Minister.

Bernard Jenkin MP, chairman of the Public Administration Select Committee (PASC), has urged the Government to support PASC’s recommendation that the Prime Minister’s adviser on Ministers’ interests should be given the power to launch his own investigations.

Jenkin speaks against House of Lords Reform Bill ‘political crisis’

Bernard Jenkin MP urged MPs to vote against the House of Lords Reform Bill, arguing that it would damage the British constitution and create a political crisis, by creating another chamber of elected party politicians which would be in conflict with the House of Commons.  He also argued that such a massive constitutional change should be put to the British people in a referendum.

Jenkin calls on Government to lift time limit on House of Lords reform debate

Bernard Jenkin MP has called on the Government to lift time limits on the debates on the House of Lords Reform Bill.  During Business of the House questions on 5th July, Mr Jenkin asked: "Will my right honourable Friend convey my thanks to the Backbench Business Committee for making an accommodation to make sure that the motion on the Prime Minister’s adviser on ministerial interests is dealt with before the end of term? I would like to record my thanks to my right honourable Friend for generously accommodating and showing his commitment to Back-Bench time. May I therefore make a further request about Monday’s business? Will he table a motion to lift the 10 o’clock rule, because it would be a travesty if that debate was so over-subscribed that speeches were truncated? I remind him that Second Reading of the Bill on the Maastricht treaty was spread over two days and went significantly into the night, providing the opportunity for a great many more Members to participate."
