Press release on nuisance phone calls

I am pleased to be co-sponsoring the ten minute rule motion on nuisance phone calls, which seeks to introduce tougher penalties.

Nuisance phone calls can cause a considerable amount of distress to the most vulnerable and can often be the product of unfair or illegal use of data.  Not only do these calls impact upon our personal lives but they can also have a significant impact on business productivity.

This motion will increase penalties for those to be found involved in this activity and will introduce a duty on organisations who buy and sell phone number data in order to ensure that numbers are registered with the Telephone Preference System (TPS).

By highlighting the issue, this draws attention to the fraudulent nature of these calls and clarifies the definition so that we can put a stop to unwanted callers.
