I am currently arranging a visit to see the tremendous work done by volunteers at the Brightlingsea and Wivenhoe foodbanks. In advance of my visit and to raise awareness of the availability and accessibility of the Wivenhoe Foodbank, please do read the following:
WIVENHOE FOOD BANK. The Food Bank is open every Thursday from 12-2 pm in the Congregational Church on the High Street, Wivenhoe. After fund raising efforts, it was opened in December as a satellite of Colchester Food Bank, (which operates under the auspices of the Trussell Trust) due to the fact that 49 adults and 20 children in crisis from the Wivenhoe area were helped by the Colchester branch during last year.
Anyone could find themselves in a crisis situation, as a result of family breakdown, redundancy, health issues, or late payment of benefits, when payment of existing financial obligations, mortgages, rent, utilities, loans etc., leaves little money for groceries or other essential goods. That is why we are here. We know from the example at Brightlingsea that, for various reasons, it can take up to 8 months to get local food banks up and running, and we are widening our pool of local voucher holders, and continually publicising our services. The CAB, teachers, GPs and local ministers are voucher holders who can signpost people to the Food Bank.
Clients can pop in for a cuppa, some soup, a chat with volunteers, and be given a balanced selection of groceries and essential toiletries according to the size of their family to help them through an emergency. We are a friendly bunch of volunteers, and clients can be assured of a warm, confidential welcome - I emphasise that neither clients nor volunteers have to be religious.
Finally, we are conscious that emergencies don't only happen on a Thursday, and we can be contacted out of these set hours to meet clients' needs on an ad hoc basis. If you know anyone who might need require our help, they can contact the following volunteers : myself, firstname.lastname@example.org, telephone 07949 891356; Suzie Williams, email@example.com, telephone 07921 524598, or Glyn Evans, firstname.lastname@example.org, telephone 07899 805803.
We are also happy to answer any general queries about the Food Bank, and particularly to take offers of donations of food, toiletries or cleaning products, by e-mail or telephone details above."
