Bernard has highlighted the urgent need for economic regeneration in Harwich and the surrounding areas of Tendring District. As well as lobbying the Government to support Harwich’s bid to become a hub for the off-shore wind farm sector, Bernard also called a debate in the House of Commons on the need for economic regeneration and training opportunities in Harwich.
Following his debate, Bernard said, “The Minister recognised that Harwich needs support to encourage growth in the new wind turbine industry, for which the town is so ideally placed. The “Energising Harwich” pilot offers a great deal of promise and the Minister understands that this pilot is about ensuring that the skills learned equip local people and enable them to apply for jobs that will otherwise go to people from outside the area. This scheme has the potential to be the spark needed to breathe life back into industry in Harwich and I have been assured by the Minister that he will keep a close eye on the Harwich pilot to give it the best chance of success”.
“Encouraging jobs and industry in Harwich is a priority for me and I will continue to make the case that it should be a priority for central Government too".
